Concordia 27 - Milwaukee, WI

Located on the corner of 27^th and Wells St, Concordia 27 is the transformation of a vacant, historic building into a bustling community and wellness hub and source of affordable housing for Milwaukee’s Near West Side. Greenfire worked as construction managers of the project, bringing Quorum Architects’ reimagination of a Wiegand Enterprise property to “fruition.”

The mixed-use concept and redevelopment of the site was a collaborative effort, which garnered support from many local organizations, businesses, as well as local, state, and federal bodies. The Wisconsin Department of Administration provided American Rescue Plan Act funding, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development provided funds to help the project get its legs.

Concordia 27 serves as the new headquarters for Near West Side Partners (NWSP), a local non-profit with aims to revitalize the Near West Side of Milwaukee. Concordia 27 will serve as a hub of community resources for local entrepreneurs, a café, gathering and meeting spaces, as well as other local organizations. The development’s first floor is also home to the Milwaukee Centers for Independence’s training center and 12,000 SF state-of-the-art meal prep kitchen, whose workforce has the capability to provide nearly 30,000 meals daily to combat food insecurity across Milwaukee County. Concordia 27 is also home to Fruition MKE’s coworking, makerspace and café, and SWIM (Scaling Wellness in Milwaukee) a non-profit resource and therapy center that addresses trauma and provides wellness services.

Relying on vast experience in adaptive reuse and historic renovations, Greenfire was onboarded early in the project to address unique challenges that can arise in a project like this. Greenfire’s constant communication between key project stakeholders can provide innovative solutions to a project – like unique food-prep-area-approved transparent ceiling tiles in MCFI’s prep kitchen to allow natural light, or a functional moveable serving window / door for Fruition’s café portion.
