The Wheatley Redevelopment is the historic renovation of a former MPS school into mixed-income apartments and includes the new construction of an adjacent four-story, stick-framed multifamily building. The 84,000 SF school building was constructed in 1902 with additions completed in the 1960s and 1970s. The existing school building includes 42 units and provides an array of amenities including useful educational, wellness, and entrepreneurial programming and support for residents and neighbors. The new building is stick-frame construction atop slab-on-grade foundation and includes 40 units. Other on-site amenities include a fitness center, community room, media room, a demonstration kitchen, and a café. The project is an affordable housing development in the State of Wisconsin and relies on a number of funding sources including TIF, State, Federal and Historic tax credits.
